Scientific Sessions

The Society for Vascular Medicine had a presence at several societal meetings this year, including the American College of Phlebology Scientific Sessions, led by Chair Yung-Wei Chi, DO, along with speakers Marcelo Gomes, MD, FSVM, Robert Schainfeld, DO, FSVM, Aditya Sharma, MBBS, FSVM, and Ido Weinberg, MD, FSVM. Sessions included:

• IVC Filter

Symposium on Advanced Wound Care Fall Conference

In its goal to promote continuing educational opportunities, SVM partnered with the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care (SAWC) to present a four-session Comprehensive Treatment of Peripheral Arterial and Venous Disease, September 26-28, 2015, in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was jointly presented with the Amputation Prevention Symposium. Session leadership for SVM was provided by Alan Hirsch, MD, MSVM, and Emile Mohler, MD, FSVM.

The Comprehensive Treatment of Peripheral Arterial and Venous Disease track provided an overview of surgical and medical treatment of vascular disease for the management of patients with arterial and venous disorders.

Sessions included:

• Diagnostic Evaluation of Lower Extremity Edema
• Chronic Venous Insufficiency: Pathophysiology and Treatment of Venous Wounds
• Lower Extremity Hybrid Swelling
• "Exovascular" (Compression) and Endovascular Therapy for Venous Statis Ulcers

Session presenters were Drs. Hirsch and Mohler, as well as Teresa Carman, MD, FSVM, Steven Dean, DO, FSVM, Raghu Kolluri, MD, FSVM, and Thom Rooke, MD, MSVM.

VIVA/SVM Comprehensive Vascular Review Course

For the sixth year, the Society for Vascular Medicine joined VIVA in offering the Comprehensive Vascular Review Course on Vascular and Endovascular Medicine, October 31-November 1, 2015. This two-day program offered a detailed, problem-based, intensive review course including both vascular and endovascular components. This course was also designed to prepare physicians planning for the American Board of Vascular Medicine (ABVM) board certification examinations. Steven Dean, DO, FSVM, served as SVM Course Director along with VIVA Course Directors and SVM members Michael Jaff, DO, MSVM, Joshua Beckman, MD, MSVM, and Michael Dake, MD.

SVM member presenters included John (Jerry) Bartholomew, MD, MSVM, Mark Bates, MD, FSVM, Mark Burket, MD, FSVM, James Froehlich, MD, MPH, FSVM, Bruce Gray, DO, MSVM, Scott Kinlay, MBBS, FSVM, Geno Merli, MD, FSVM, Gregory Piazza, MD, FSVM, Suman Rathbun, MD, FSVM, John Rundback, MD, FSVM, Robert Schainfeld, DO, FSVM, Timothy Sullivan, MD, FSVM, and Ido Weinberg, MD, FSVM.

Medicare Evidence Development & Coverage Advisory Committee (MEDCAC) Meeting on Lower-Extremity Peripheral Artery Disease Treatments

The Society for Vascular Medicine joined with other leading societies to respond to the MEDCAC meeting to examine scientific evidence for lower-extremity PAD treatments that aim to improve health outcomes in Medicare beneficiaries – to address areas where evidence gaps exit related to lower-extremity PAD. The panel discussed care for patients with three levels of disease progression: asymptomatic, intermittent claudication and critical limb ischemia.

Speaking on behalf of the value of early diagnosis and appropriate treatment to save limbs and lives, SVM, represented by James Froehlich, MD, MPH, FSVM, and John (Jerry) Bartholomew, MD, MSVM, joined together with a coalition of other leading non-profit professional associations and a voluntary health organization with combined membership of more than 100,000 physicians to present before MEDCAC and advocate for continued access to PAD treatments. Along with SVM, these organizations represented the majority of PAD specialists in the United States: American College of Cardiology, American College of Radiology, American Heart Association, Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, Society of Interventional Radiology, and VIVA Physicians. All seven of these groups share a common goal of ensuring patients’ access to high-quality, medically necessary care.

The seven organizations followed the panel’s response with a written response that will appear in Vascular Medicine and other societal journals.

IAC Research Award Program 2016 Call for Proposals

The Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) Research Committee seeks to support innovative and meritorious research relevant to accreditation and quality improvement through its annual IAC Research Award Program. The purpose of the research award is to gain insight into the accreditation process and its value to medicine and society. For complete details about the IAC Research Award Program, including links to published abstracts and manuscripts, visit intersocietal.org/research.

For 2016, the IAC Research Committee will award grants up to a maximum of $75,000 (including institutional overhead). Interested individuals are encouraged to submit proposals that advance the IAC Research Committee’s mission of “Strengthening Accreditation through Research.”

• Notification for Letter of Intent Decision -- April 2, 2016
• Proposal Submission -- June 2, 2016
• Notification of Award -- September 2016
